BikeE
Ullman was one of the founders,
first president and chief product designer for BikeE
Corporation. BikeE was founded in 1992 and by 2000 was the
largest manufacturer of recumbent bicycles in the world with over
$6M in revenue. Ullman left BikeE in 2001 and it went out of
business in 2002 after producing nearly 30,000 bicycles. At BikeE,
Ullman was responsible
for:
- Building the company as President then chairman of the Board
- Designing products
- Specifying customer requirements
- Testing products
- Managing vendors in US and Taiwan
The following is a catalog of some of the bikes he designed with
his partner Paul Atwood.

The BikeE AT- the most popular model. Introduced in 1997, it won Bicycling Magazine's New Product of the
Year award. Extensive work went into the design of the
rear suspension and the seat. Experiments with customers led
to the optimum design. Manufactured by BikeE in the US and
Giant in Taiwan.

The BikeE FX, the first
off-road recumbent. Unique front suspension design by Ullman
with an internal air spring/ damper. Introduced in 1999.
The Tandem, the compact
ride for two. Introduced in 2000 it offered a compact ride
with excellent handling qualities. Initial concept by Jeremy
Gililand who was mentored by Ullman while still a student and after joining
BikeE as an engineer.
The FantacE - a concept
bike designed in 1994. A monocoque construction of Kevlar, glass and carbon fiber.
