The Design Process

Quality that is designed into products saves time and money. You can not inspect or manufacture quality into products. By front loading the product development process (PDP) with definition, specification and concept development, while keeping the process flexible, it is possible reduce firefighting and engineering changes.

Ullman can help you:

  • Assess your current PDP
  • Design a PDP that saves time and money
  • Train your engineers in PDP best practices
  • Develop quality products
  • Manage you product portfolio
  • Since the mid 1980s, Ullman has been a leader in design process research and application. Beginning in 1984 his research has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Schlumberger, Boeing, and others. In 1986 he founded and was first chairman of the ASME Design Theory and Methodology Committee which has just held its 15th annual conference.

His work has been instrumental in:

    • Understanding the design process
    • Managing product development
    • Applying best practices to improve process
    • Understanding the importance of decision making in the design process
    • Modeling information about products and processes

What he has learned through his research and industrial experience has been applied to:

    He has given presentations at:

    • PDMA (Product Data Management Association) Conference
    • (Society for Information Management) Conference
    • DTM (Design Theory and Methodology Conference)
    • ICED (International Conference on Engineering Design)
    • COFES (Conference on the Future of Engineering Software)
    • Management Roundtable
    • ASI (American Supplier Institute) Conference
    • D. H. Brown Annual Conerence
He has presented over 30 short courses in industry. Click for a list of technical training customers
